In situ treatment technologies for pit latrines to mitigate groundwater contamination by fecal pathogens: a review of recent technical advances

چکیده
Abstract On-site sanitation systems such as pit latrines are extensively used around the world, while there is a growing number of evidence documenting impact on groundwater quality that may affect human health. Hence, this paper summarizes various safe-sanitation technologies by broadly categorizing them into fecal pathogen disinfection methods (anaerobic digestion, chemical disinfection, biological additives, solar pasteurization and vermicomposting) capturing (pit lining permeable reactive barriers, latter which simultaneously capture sanitize sludge in latrines). While some reviewed have been widely practiced for mitigating microbial contamination groundwater, others still early stage commercialization field validation. Though challenges to selection adoption most appropriate technology, discusses readiness each technology stand-alone management solution.

Pit Latrines and Groundwater Contamination Negative Impacts of a Popular Sanitation Method Worldwide an estimated 1.77 billion people use pit latrines as their primary mode of sanitation. With the prevalence of pit latrine use growing in developing countries, there is heightened concern about the negative impacts on drinking water. متن کاملPit Latrines and Their Impacts on Groundwater Quality: A Systematic Review
BACKGROUND Pit latrines are one of the most common human excreta disposal systems in low-income countries, and their use is on the rise as countries aim to meet the sanitation-related target of the Millennium Development Goals. There is concern, however, that discharges of chemical and microbial contaminants from pit latrines to groundwater may negatively affect human health. OBJECTIVES Our g...
متن کاملWhat should be done to mitigate groundwater contamination?
Groundwater contamination is a serious problem that is growing in the United States, but its true extent is not known and it is difficult to determine because of the complexities of contaminants, their transformation, and fate in groundwater systems. It is also difficult to predict their movement in groundwater. Since we know that the problem is serious and that our needs for groundwater will g...
متن کاملAssessing the vulnerability of groundwater sources to fecal contamination
The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (HBWS) selectively chlorinates half of its groundwater supply to provide drinking water that meets the Total Coliform Rule. The objective of this study was to determine whether the groundwater sources used by HBWS are vulnerable to contamination with fecal matter and would require routine disinfection. Larger volumes (1,000 mL) of samples from groundwater and ...

Combined cataract and vitreoretinal surgery results in better compliance in patients with posterior segment pathology and should be the preferred approach to reduce the high rate of cataract development after vitreoretinal surgery and to improve earlier visual acuity. Technological advances in both anterior and posterior segment surgery are leading to the development of instruments with a small...
